Rep. Rogers, Sen. Lewis debate on Question 4 in Lexington

Published for The Lexington Minuteman on Nov. 4.

At the Lexington Community Center, the debate for and against legalizing marijuana burned hot Thursday night.

For his most recent Open House Forum, state Rep. Jay Kaufman brought together state Rep. Dave Rogers (D-Cambridge) and state Sen. Jason Lewis (D-Winchester) who respectively supported and opposed the ballot question to legalize recreational marijuana on Nov. 3.

Question 4 is a ballot question which would legalize the sale and possession of recreational marijuana in Massachusetts, and would allow anyone to grow a limited number of plants for their own use. It does not allow marijuana use in public. The question is on the ballot for the general election on Nov. 8.

Rogers, who represents the 24th Middlesex District, said the ballot question is an opportunity to rein in underground crime syndicates who control a lucrative marijuana industry.

“Right now we have a large, criminal, unregulated $1 billion industry in Massachusetts,” Rogers said. “The ill effects of combating a black market is more harmful than the substance itself.”
